I’ve recently changed jobs and have joined one of the major IT giants in the world. I was so happy that I was joining an “MNC” and how good life would be from here on. Well I am not complaining as this company has the best facilities any employee could ask for. It has a huge and impressively landscaped campus, comfy work timings, eating options galore, well equipped gym, the best transport facility in the industry etc.
But all these do not make a company. A company is recognized by the people it has and the personality they portray. This is where I’ve been a bit disappointed and disturbed.
I’ve been traveling by the company provided transport for over a month now. It’s a mid size bus we board from our respective pick up points. I guess when it’s full we are around 40 people who take the same bus everyday. The bus seems to be such a dull and dead place. No body speaks to the person sitting next to him / her. It’s a like a silent rule “people who board this bus do not speak to your co-passengers”. Forget guys speaking to the females, guys don’t speak to guys sitting next to them. And one of the very old postulates that two females within close proximity cannot survive without speaking to each other can be seen blown to smithereens in our bus. Initially I was of the opinion that as I was new I was missing out. But I’ve noticed people traveling in the same bus for years also have the same problem or are the problem themselves. To better the situation I started the conversation on a few occasions, which is so unlike me, but the results were not very encouraging. People seem to be so engrossed in their own thoughts that they’ve no room for others.
We are supposed to be living in the age of information and communication and I’ve encountered such a lack of it. One of the rushes of a yet to be released Hindi movie has the tag line, “the longest journey is the distance between two people”. I find it so true right now.

Boss.. Beware!!!!!!!
Not long before you join the crowd of zombies..
how would you know if you have joined them... simple.. the day u stop trying to pick up a conversation with the person next to you.
one very simple thing that haunted me for long after I reached here.. everybody in the workplace gave you a smile and a nod as you passed them..on the corridor, on the lift.. so unlike the workplaces in India. i think we can pick it up.
